once i get my camera back in action, you'll see better pics. I know you probably arent interested in rocks and stuff (like i said before, not many ppl are), but i got a challenge for you. Go the the nearest river, lake, pond, and even a gravel path. Find a rock that you think is really neat, take a picture (keep it if you wwant) then send me the picture over email so i can possibly or attempt to tell you what it may be. It will really help me with my geology stuff.and it will be like a test for me (right now i'm testing myself, i collected a bunch of random rocks and i'm trying to find out what each one is. so far, i only found out what one was and it was quartzite. the rest is still a mystery). Did you know that Petrology is the branch of geology that studies rocks and the condition in which rocks form? Cool huh? You may be confused, because you think that geology is the study of rocks. But geology is made up of 4 categories:
-Paleontology
-Mineralogy**
-hydrology
-volcanology
I put the two stars beside mineralogy because thats the category i want to do, and the category Petrology falls under.
So no, geology isn't just the study of rocks. Heres the definition:
Geology-the science dealing with the physical nature and history of the earth including the structure and development of its crust, the compositions of its interior, individual rock types, and the forms of life found in fossils.
So now that you got that straight, and i hope its carved in your mind, that geology isn't ALL about the study of rocks.
i know i'm talking about granite right now, and i havent been in specific detail, so thats going to change right now.
Granite is a common and widely occurring type of intrusive, felsic, igneous rock (as you probably already know). Granites usually have medium to course grain texture. Occasionally some individual crystals (phenocrysts) are larger than the groundmass in which case the texture is known as porphyritic. A granitic rock with a porphyritic texture is sometimes known as a porphyry.
I highly suggest Google to be the place you look up stuff on, because Wikipedia sometimes isn't the most reliable, being sometimes the words are bigger and harder to understand, and plus people can go on their and change the information anytime. Yes i do rely on something with Wikipedia, such as the definition, but other sites may be better. Here are some websites i rely on:
www.graniteland.com/stone/color (for researching granites, marbles, ect)
www.probertencyclopedia.com/rocks
www.geology.com
www.mineralgallery.co.za/minerals.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rock_types
http://www.es.ucl.ac.uk/schools/glossary/schist.htm (about schist, its a british site also)
Hope i've been helpful to anyone who wants to be a geologist!
